Nicolaas Schaper is emeritus professor Endocrinology at the Maastricht University Hospital, The Netherlands. His research is focussed on the pathophysiological, clinical and epidemiological aspects of (lower extremity) complications of diabetes and related chronic diseases. He was the scientific secretary of the International Working Group on the Diabetic Foot (IWGDF) since 1996 and its chair since 2015. With its editorial board he coordinated the quadrennial International Guidelines on the Diabetic Foot (latest version 2024), which consisted of six working groups that produced guidelines on specific topics. In addition, he was working group member (and co-chair until 2019) in the IWGDF guidelines on Peripheral Artery Disease in Diabetes. Nicolaas was also involved in several other (both international and national) guidelines on diabetes and peripheral arterial disease, including TASC-2. He is author of > 350 international scientific papers (HF > 60), was a co-founder of the Maastricht Study, a large scale in depth epidemiological study on diabetes and related diseases, and is recipient of several (inter)national awards.
