Raffaella Buzzetti is a Professor of Endocrinology at the Department of Experimental Medicine, Sapienza University of Rome. Since 2017, she has been leading the Diabetes Unit at Policlinico Umberto I Hospital. She also serves as Vice Coordinator of the School of Specialization in Endocrinology and is a member of the Teaching Committee for the PhD program in Molecular Medicine.
Professor Buzzetti is the Elected Director of SID (Italian Diabetes Society). She previously served as Vice-President of the National Committee of Medical Research Guarantors and was recently appointed as a board member of the National Committee of Medical Research Evaluators for a four-year term.
She has been Principal Investigator of several national and international research projects focused on diabetes and metabolic diseases. Among these, the NIRAD study notably helped to clarify the pathogenetic and clinical characteristics of adult-onset autoimmune diabetes.
Professor Buzzetti has received numerous research grants and is the author or co-author of 284 scientific publications (Scopus H-index: 54).
Her main clinical and research interests include genetic susceptibility to polygenic diseases such as type 1 diabetes, the pathogenesis and clinical features of type 1 and adult-onset autoimmune diabetes, and the coordination of phase II and phase III clinical trials.
