Professor Hervé Bachelez is Professor of Dermatology at the University Paris Cité and in the Department of Dermatology of the Saint-Louis Hospital in Paris, France. Since 2004, Professor Bachelez has been full professor of clinical dermatology at the Université Paris-Diderot/Université Paris Cité, where he received his Ph.D. in Immunology in 1999. In 2024, Professor Bachelez has also been appointed Guest Professor at Xiangya Hospital, Central South University in Changsha, China.
Professor Bachelez’s clinical and research activities focus on inflammatory skin diseases, mainly psoriasis and psoriasis-related diseases, but also hidradenitis suppurativa, lichen planus among others. He is conducting his basic and translational research at the Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale (INSERM U1163), in the Laboratory of Genetics of Skin Diseases at the Imagine Institute for Human Genetic Diseases in Necker Hospital, Paris. His areas of scientific research include immunogenetics and molecular mechanisms of the aforementioned immune-mediated and inflammatory skin diseases. Professor Bachelez has received several scientific awards, including the Charles Grupper and Robert Degos awards, and the Sven Hellerström Lecture award. He is a member of several national and international scientific societies, including the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology and the European Dermatology Forum (EDF). He is the former president of the French society for Dermatological Research and of the Group for Research on Psoriasis of the French Society for Dermatology. Internationally, he is the former President of the European Society for Dermatological Research (ESDR) and of the International Psoriasis Council (IPC). Professor Bachelez has published more than 310 manuscripts in peer-reviews journals, among which more than 150 focusing on psoriasis, including the New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of Clinical Investigation, Journal of Experimental Medicine, the Lancet, Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, and Arthritis and Rheumatism as leading author. Among Professor Bachelez’ most prominent scientific achievements is the pioneering identification of gene defects of the IL36 pathway causing generalized pustular psoriasis, which led to the successful development of tailored therapies.
